On the Thursday of Crufts 2023 Roy Ellershaw and Fen will be representing the working Clumber spaniel at Crufts. Fen will work in the display ring with Springers and Cockers in a demonstration by Roy, and Jon Bailey on behalf of the KC, confirming that a well-trained Clumber can hold its own with other top quality working spaniels.
It’s an honour to be invited to show off working dogs to an audience which will be knowledgeable and include leading figures from the Kennel Club. From what I have seen Fen will impress the Clumber on quite a few minds.
A similar impact was achieved by Andy Parker with the mighty Gino and Elvis at last year’s Game Fair. Their part, in an independent demonstration saw an admiration for the Parkforth pair, and gained fans in seriously significant spaniel handlers.
Back to Fen. A trip to Scotland during last season saw him take part in a demonstration, videoed for the Scottish Government, to persuade modifications to a bill which could have unintentionally banned working with spaniels in Scotland. A Clumber was seen effectively speaking for the sport.
Just as Rigg and James Darley’s Spot and Duncan before them we should acknowledge the wider influence of dogs trained to field trial winning standards. Long may we have skilled people dedicated to breed promotion by training for excellence.
The entire breed benefits.
